Meet Julia Slanina: Funding Recipient & Founder of Treehouse Medical

Founders Fund Canada Recipient Julia Slanina

Who is Julia Slanina?

Prior to medical school, Julia's unique skills include international experience in bilateral relations from Global Affairs and working directly in diplomacy as a foreign service officer in Europe. Treehouse Medical stemmed from having to halt her MD studies to care for her mother and become a stay-at-home mom. That’s where Julia saw a real need for attention in maternal health. Since then, Julia decided to focus her medical knowledge on developing technology and improving patient and industry outcomes.

What is the ultimate vision that you have for Treehouse Medical?

To become an industry leader for the maternal health community in Canada and in global markets. It is known that by age 5 the brain has developed to 90% of its adult size. Providing the best start in life provides children with a solid foundation for a healthier and resilient future. Maternal health providers play a pivotal role between pregnancy and age 5 where crucial foundations are built. Treehouse Medical creates a future for success through its holistic care delivery model.

When asked “What are things about yourself or your business that you were told has to change in order to fit into the traditional mould of a successful entrepreneur? How have you begun to overcome them?” Julia responded:

People will always give you suggestions and offer you insights on how to adapt your business. Sometimes they are valuable and sometimes they make you question your choices. I focus on what mothers and care providers need and struggle with, I talk to the source and help the people who can help me in delivering the best solution. I understand how hard it is to be a mom, I understand how overwhelming and exhausting it feels to feel run down and unsupported, isolated and like you are not enough. I designed my company in helping this industry so that it can support mothers and our most valuable assets (our children). ;)

Why did you decide to join the Founders Fund?

To have a strong community of women who are united and feel empowered by talking to one another. You no longer need to be in the same city and in the same neighbourhood to help each other. I wanted to broaden my community and meet women who are driven, resourceful and bold!
